Configuring iPhone 3.x for Microsoft Exchange using ActiveSync

This also applies to iPod Touch

You will need to have the following information available:

  • eCommons Name
  • eCommons Password
  • E-Mail Address (This is your primary email account, usually first_last@hms.harvard.edu)
  • Server Name: email.med.harvard.edu
  • Domain: med
  • Description: This can be anything you wish it to be, for example “HMS Exchange”

Instructions

  1. Start from the Home screen. To get to the Home screen, press the Home button once.
  2. Tap on Settings
  3. Tap on Mail, Contacts, Calendars
  4. Tap on Add Account
  5. Tap on Microsoft Exchange
  6. Enter the following information (you may need to scroll the screen down in order to see all the fields):
    1. Email: Your primary email address
    2. Domain: med
    3. User Name: Your eCommons User Name
    4. Password: Your eCommons Password
    5. Description: any descriptive text (ie HMS Exchange)
  7. Tap Next
  8. Enter the email server name: email.med.harvard.edu
  9. Tap Next
  10. Wait for verification to complete.
    If Verification fails, try connecting to a Wi-Fi network rather than connecting via 3G.  Connections via 3G can take longer, causing the verification process to time out.
  11. Select which services to synchronize. NOTE: Does not sync Exchange with Mobile Me or other services.
    Mail - Syncs all of your mail to the iPhone.
    Contacts - Syncs your Exchange contacts to your iPhone
    Calendars - Syncs your Exchange Calendars to the iPhone
  12. Tap Save

Once the iPhone has connected to Exchange, you will be required to enter a 4-digit pin for security.  This pin will be required each time you activate the iPhone from sleep.
